A Stitched Smorgasbord - The Festive Fare of Los Angeles
Los Angeles County Fair 2024 Entry
A Stitched Smorgasbord - The Festive Fare of Los Angeles
Crocheted Multicultural Dishes
Growing up in LA I loved going to the LA County Fair. Does anyone else remember those fair commercials where they said that 'if anyone needs a county fair, it's LA' ?
You would either find me screaming down a potato sack slide or spending time perusing the Home Arts Competition (and not just because they were in air conditioning!). I was captivated by the ornate and creative contributions by entrants. I never would have thought I would be one of those competitors, but here I am!
The theme of the 2024 fair is Stars, Stripes and Fun: Celebrating Community. Immediately, I thought of doing something 4th of July themed, and my mind went back to summer fireworks lying on a lakeshore anxiously starring at the night sky waiting for the first explosion of light. But after some brainstorming with my husband Andrew, I realized that would only meet the 'Stars, Stripes and Fun' part of the them but not the 'Celebrating Community' portion?
After tossing around some ideas together we landed on a community potluck illustrating a portion of all the delicious foods you can find through LA from all the wonder cultures and ethnicities spread through our massive county.
Along the way of crocheting this there were so many changes. The table went from round to rectuangluar, Thai food was added (did you know that LA is the only city in the US with an officially recognized Thai Town?!) and about a million other changes occurred! Stay tuned into this blog as I share more of the piece and the pattern for it.
And if you would like an in person peek then come see my entry and other artists' wonderful pieces at the LA County Fair this May!
